The Realm of Fire is a fantasy adventure written by Dan Absalonson. As young Prince Drefan dreams of some day leading an army of his own, the royal is suddenly summoned to appear before his father in Wizard Nerian’s quarters. Lying on his death bed, Wizard Nerian advises King Eadric and his sons that he has chosen Prince Drefan to replace him when he dies. He gives Prince Drefan careful instructions on how to access a portal, which will transport him to the Realm of Fire. There, he must seek out the strongest male dragon, remove one of its talons whilst it slumbers, and return to the kingdom before it wakes. The young prince must follow the wizard’s instructions to the letter if he is to make it out alive. Determined, yet fearful, Prince Drefan is about to have a dragon-filled adventure that will change his life forever.
Dan Absalonson’s tale of transformation from prince to wizard was highly detailed, filled with adventure, suspense and fun. The friendship between Prince Drefan and his brother strengthens as the journey of a lifetime is about to be undertaken. The detail of each moment was so clearly written that the words almost transformed into a high-definition film before my very eyes. I am hoping that this tale sprouts into an adventure series, not only showing how Prince Drefan becomes Royal Wizard Drefan, but also his day-to-day adventures as he wields his powers to defend the kingdom as needed. I am sure my own heart stood still in many suspenseful moments, as the prince fights for his life to get back to his own realm. I very much enjoyed The Realm of Fire, and recommend it to teenage readers who enjoy the enchantment of other-worldly creatures, magic, and the days of medieval lore.
