The Rainbow Room by Claire Ishi Ayetoro is a short read that is curiously moving with a strong emotional and psychological arc, something you don’t read every day. His name is Jack Taylor. He wakes up in an unfamiliar room with an arrangement he has never seen before. Despite the throbbing pain in his head that he suspects is the result of too much to drink the night before, he examines the wide-open room with a single cot in the middle of the floor and a large light on the ceiling above the cot. On the north wall is a large monitor screen. He tries to head for the door, but it shuts and traps him. After a few attempts to find a way out, the monitor screen comes on with this message: no deed goes unpunished. As reality sinks in, he realizes that he has only a few minutes to decode the mystery of his captivity in the so-called rainbow room.
Claire Ishi Ayetoro’s method of telling her story in short paragraphs and single sentences per page is simple and effective, generating anticipation as it fuels your curiosity to find out more. Jack is trapped, but why and how did he get there? Who put him there? It becomes a study of consciousness as it reflects the way Jack thinks. Ayetoro takes you into the abyss of isolation that is mysterious and intriguing and in the end, reveals this as the state you are intended to be in. The Rainbow Room is both diabolical and absorbing. Every color of the rainbow is covered by the human psyche. For Ayetoro, it is a commanding exercise in creative thinking. For you, it evokes a state of mind that makes you identify what a good short story is. It is an absolute must-read.
