A.D. Craig’s The Queen of Two Hearts: The Indie Hearts features the dynamics of an open relationship. Avi is the lead singer of Indie Hearts. He is also known for his one-night stands, recreational drug use, and excessive drinking after his performances. Before one of his performances, he notices one of the event technicians who resembles his deceased fiancée. Avi approaches her while she is waiting for a ride. Avi insists he wants to be her friend and joins her for lunch. They have a quiet meal until two fans ask for his autograph, which causes other patrons to take pictures. After seeing her picture in a tabloid, Elowyn quits her job. Avi is devastated. Four years pass, and Elowyn learns that Avi has overdosed on ketamine and is in the hospital. She meets Lake the drummer in Avi’s hospital room. Elowyn feels guilty and stays with Avi. Lake helps Elowyn deal with Avi’s withdrawal symptoms.
A.D. Craig’s description of Avi is a classic example of the imagined dream lifestyles of rock stars. Traveling from one city to the next and binging at the after-parties can take its toll on anyone. I admired Avi’s determination to simply pursue a friendship with Elowyn. She was paranoid, which I completely understood. I could never have predicted Lake’s involvement in the plot. The smooth transitions between the views of Elowyn, Lake, and Avi gave insight into their emotions. The vivid details given about each character made it easy to envision their interactions. Communication was an important factor in the storyline. The exciting energy of the Indie Hearts performances was easy for me to relate to from my personal experiences at concerts. I recommend The Queen of Two Hearts to adult readers interested in rock star lifestyles and romances.
