The Queen of Discord is a work of fiction in the urban fantasy genre that is aimed at a young adult audience and was written by author Matthew Cox. The book is the fourth installment in the Temporal Armistice series, and readers would benefit from familiarizing themselves with the series before reading this book. The book tells a familiar story of a world-destroying entity that must be stopped at all costs but sets itself apart from others in the genre by telling the story from the perspective of the world-destroying entity as they strive to avoid fulfilling their destiny. What results is a fascinating perspective on the fantasy genre with plenty of twists and turns.
The beauty and insight of writing from a perspective like author Matthew Cox is that he subverts the tropes of the genre with a great sense of tongue-in-cheek, creating a relatable badass heroine who simultaneously toys with the villain role throughout the plot. This keeps the narrative on a knife-edge and heightens the excitement of the story, whilst also making protagonist Brooklyn Amari a highly engaging and difficult-to-predict character. The book is filled with attitude and smooth dialogue, as well as atmospheric creations from the realms of dark fantasy and wry, witty asides by Brooklyn and the people she meets along her adventurous journey. Fans of the existing series are sure to love this amped-up and powerful continuation, and I’d certainly recommend The Queen of Discord and the Temporal Armistice series to dark fantasy readers everywhere.
