Jose Luis Mendoza is 53 years old and about to lose his job as a storeman at a Walmart in California. He’s also about to be kicked out of his shared apartment due to his marijuana habit. Jose Luis likes to blame everyone around him, especially his family, for the things that are wrong in his life. In the following year, he moves back in with his mother Lucia and her latest husband Raphael, which only lasts a few weeks before he can’t stand it any longer. He then goes to live in a shed on his younger sister Sylvia’s property in Georgia. How long will he last in his sister’s shed? Will he ever regain control of his life, or are the shadows of his past too strong? Read The Prodigal Son From Chambers Lane by Daniel Maldonado to find out.

The Prodigal Son From Chambers Lane is the story of a broken man still trying to find his place in the world. It’s a reasonably short novel but a lot happens, and the flashbacks to his childhood add further depth to Jose Luis’s story. This is book three of Daniel Maldonado’s Chambers Lane Series and is the first to feature Jose Luis as the protagonist. The reader can’t help feeling empathy for Jose Luis despite his own self-sabotaging ways. I found myself cheering for him every time he had a win, even if it was a small one, and found the ending extremely satisfying. This story will stay with the reader long past the final sentence. This book would suit lovers of family sagas and gritty reality.
