The Princess with Invisible Hair (La princessa de cabello invisible) is a bilingual (Spanish - English) children’s picture book written by Yulien Jiménez and illustrated by Danh Tran Art. Mila is a young child who lives in a fantasy world of castles and silk. Wanting for nothing, Mila wakes up one day to find her hair is gone. Amazed and excited, Mila goes to school to show off her brand new invisible hair. Although astonished at the sight, Mila’s school friends ask what happened to her. They also suggest ways to cover herself and hide her hairless head while marveling at the fact that it will reappear some day, more beautiful than ever.
I found this tale to be unique and one filled with a confidence-building like no other. Embedding into a child’s mind all of the positive things that accompany hair loss is one of the most important things a parent can do. Whether the reason for hair loss comes with illness, stress, or even old age, it can very much impair a person’s self-confidence. Yulien Jiménez has shown that it is not only possible to make a child feel less self-conscious about their own hair loss, but that a child may even feel empowered by it. I found myself smiling, not only at the story portrayed but at the illustrations which brought the story to life. I very much enjoyed The Princess with Invisible Hair (La princessa de cabello invisible) and recommend this magical tale to all children aged four to ten, as well as to those parents with children who are going through hair loss of any type.
