Stressing that evil comes from sin, writer/journalist Deirdre Reilly cautions readers in her fourteen chapter book The Pretend Christian that God gives us all the freedom to make our own decisions and hopefully learn from our personal actions. Putting denomination aside, Reilly instructs both the established believer and the novice that while evil is such a complex, frightening entity, faith will carry us to a comforting place in our daily life. Using personal experiences, Reilly repeatedly reminds us that God walks with us and is there to protect those who allow His assistance. As the reader shares in the author’s personal journey, she reminds us that the journey is hard and that it truly never ends. The first thing that needs to be done is to pray. A follow-up lesson is written at the end of each chapter to serve as a take-away for searchers as well as established Christians.
The Pretend Christian: Traveling Beyond Denomination to the True Jesus is written in succinct sentence structure using layman’s terms for an easy reading experience. Deirdre Reilly offers comfort in such statements as “Church is a place to worship, not the focus of worship” to assure the reader that the practice or lack of church attendance is not a deal-breaker for a successful relationship with God. The author uses personal examples to illustrate the love of Christ and the ease with which that love is obtained. The Pretend Christian is a non-threatening testimonial of the accessibility of being part of God’s family. This is a perfect addition to Bible study groups and personal study.
