The Potioneer (Shadeborn, Book 3) by K.C. Finn takes readers to several magical and dangerous realms yet again, where hidden communities and djinns dwell. Seven years of bad luck for breaking a mirror is a superstition for humans, but it is not the case for shadeborn Lily Coltrane. Fearing not being able to fully protect her from the curse, Lemarick Novel desperately seeks ways to keep Lily safe. However, he might have to resort to a solution which involves his kind’s greatest enemy.

It is wonderful to have Jazzy, Lily’s best friend and one of my favorite characters, back in the highlights of the story. Since her unfortunate spine-snapping encounter with Mother Novel, Jazzy’s in great care at Theatre Imaginique. However, the revelation of her hidden gift, the Second Sight, which enables her to see people’s pasts and futures, makes her a target. Other characters are also introduced, such as the bold, brash American potioneer Jeronomie Parnell. New faces emerge from the House of Novel, revealing more about how dysfunctional and scary the Novels are, challenging the bond between Lily, Lemarick, and the members of the theatre.

Book 3 tackles more serious issues, problems and enemies, marking another turning point in Lily’s life. Mentally and magically as a shade, she’s becoming more mature and is ready to take on some responsibilities to protect her lover and her friends, despite her fear. I’m glad that there will be more installments from this series, as I’m not ready to leave the shadeborn world yet. Kudos to Finn for another great book.
