The Porch Puppies by Elizabeth M Stevens is about a litter of puppies who were taken from their mother at a really young age and dropped on someone’s porch. A doctor and his wife who lived at the house found them and couldn’t believe that someone would dump such adorable creatures without food and water. They couldn’t keep them though, and the wife asked a neighbor to care for them while they looked for a place for them to go. A lady from the doctor's work overheard the neighbor talking about the puppies and told him that she could take them. The neighbor managed to catch all but the oldest puppy for Aimee, and she took them home. The puppies liked their new home and Callie, Aimee’s dog, was very friendly to them. Aimee helped the puppies get used to being around humans and after some weeks she began looking for their right forever homes. One by one, each puppy was taken to a great home with humans who loved them. Three of them went to great homes, while Aimee kept Happy for herself. They had a rough start in life but now they had forever homes and people who would take care of them.
I thought The Porch Puppies was an adorable and heartwarming read. There’s a lot of truth in the plot that I find important for people of all ages to know. Sadly enough, many animals are mistreated and abandoned like the pups Aimee took in. It’s important to teach our kids from a young age that pets are part of the family and that they need to be treated as such. Happy was a great main character because the story is told from the point of view of the animal and what he and his sisters went through. It has more of an impact being from the dog’s point of view rather than the humans. The illustrations are also beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. Elizabeth M Stevens has done a wonderful job with The Porch Puppies and I am looking forward to seeing more of her work.
