The Piraroo is the first book in the Tales from Puffington Hill series, written by Marko Kitti and illustrated by Ant Carlos de Ituiutaba. Max Magee is a ten-year-old boy who feels invisible to his family. His best friends are Gurdimus (a giant tarantula) and Alfred (a piraroo) - both of which are acquired from Max’s father’s exotic pet store. When Gurdimus’s lifeless body is taken by the town’s poop-bombing seagull, Max realizes how truly alone he really is and feels grateful to have Alfred by his side... until a rival pet store owner of ill repute decides that he wants Alfred for himself. When Alfred is kidnapped during a town fair, mayhem ensues as the residents of the town decide to take action (accompanied by much hilarity).
I chose this book due to the many other remarkable books written by the author, Marko Kitti. The Piraroo brings with it a vast array of emotions including sadness, frustration and laughter. I was able to connect emotionally with young Max on so many levels and found The Piraroo to be a wonderful accompaniment, regardless of where the reading bug hits you. Be aware that you will be pulled in many different directions while reading The Piraroo, as it includes death, sibling rivalry, bullying and a family environment which leaves a child feeling unheard and alone. As a complete package, however, the story of The Piraroo is not only wonderful reading for children and adults alike, but also for those who truly enjoy a well-written adventure accompanied by brilliant illustrations from beginning to end. I very much enjoyed The Piraroo and can guarantee that this book will be read time and again, regardless of the occasion.
