The Perfect Lullaby, written by Brittany Plumeri and illustrated by Charanya Kalamegam, is a children's picture book wherein an animal parent is trying to decide which bedtime song would be best to sing to their child. What makes this book so unique is that it is not just a single parent, but multiple adults in their own habitats and with their own little sleepers who all share in both the same problem and the same goal. The book is written in a lyrical, sing-song format and the story is brought to life through full color and full-page spreads of illustrations. These include families of porcupines, deer, rabbits, polar bears, and many other gorgeous creatures.
Author Brittany Plumeri and illustrator Charanya Kalamegam are a dream team in the realm of children's literature. The Perfect Lullaby is nothing short of extraordinary and in a crowded genre, such talent that stands out in the way this book does makes it a gem, indeed. There is real comfort in the story and how it is depicted that is hard to describe. The softness of the illustrations and the underlying hum of the prose have a calming effect that I have not come across before. At the story's culmination where a youngster is found to already be asleep, the message that it is the loving voice and not the song itself that matters is a beautiful moral. It is also a perfect reminder of what truly matters. Very highly recommended.
