Jane Sunley brings a warm and intelligent view to people management in The People Formula: 12 Steps to Productive, Profitable, Performing Business. There are textbooks and research books on human motivation, often told in a scientific and dry manner. The People Formula is a different kind of book —it treats you the way you want to be treated, with down to earth examples of not only is it the right way to treat people, but it pays back many times in profits, happy employees and happy customers. The author talks about important human resource issues including talent and performance reviews, culture and values, internal communication, embedding service excellence and many more.
In each step of The People Formula, the author begins with a description of the topic and its importance with stories and research from the real world, followed by a 10-step process on how to incorporate the principles in business, sharing quotations from people who have implemented the ideas, and ending with “If you only do three things” where the main points are displayed. The book is easy to read and presents valuable tools to improve leadership in the work environments. Examples of the 10-step process include: A 10-point, fool-proof method for embedding your values, a 10-point plan to shape your people promise, etc. The author's points are very concise and doable. Also, her use of quotes and using case studies such as De Vere Hotels & Village Urban Resorts puts the ideas into perspective and the real world.
It is a valuable and practical guide for anyone in management or striving to become a manager in the future. The author did a fine job addressing the importance of a positive people management environment. I highly recommend it.
