The Penumbra Paradox is a science fiction short story written by Jennifer Fales. Twenty-three-year-old Nahlah was the sole heir of the Penumbra clan, a dynastic family whose casinos were found on the Paradise Planets in the Gaya Quadrant. But she was neither a male, nor was she at all like the others in her clan. Nahlah was the result of an ill-starred romance between S'thena, an alien and a slave, and her father, Rell Penumbra. Her skin did not have the deep crimson color and black spots so highly prized in their world, being instead a dull beige, and her hair was another matter entirely. As a Penumbra, she had responsibilities and duties to fulfill, including bearing the future generations of that dynastic family. Now, however, she was travelling with Rell as an Ambassador of the House of Penumbra. They were visiting a prospective location for another casino, a tropical paradise whose owner has refused any previous offers for development of his planet. Chancellor Eito, Nahlah learned, was not a native of the planet he inhabited, but rather he came from a race of engineers. His interests in her would have far deeper roots than she could ever have imagined.

Jennifer Fales' science fiction short story, The Penumbra Paradox, takes place in a far distant place in the universe, where the Milky Way is little more than a myth or a fantasy. Yet, still, Fales' heroine, Nahlah, has learned early on the differences between the genders and the value of spotted skin markings which she conspicuously lacks. I enjoyed getting to know Nahlah and being privy to her thoughts, feelings, and plans as she's finally free of the confines of her family estate and travels for the first time to other planets. The Penumbra Paradox is enticing, exotic, and marvelous. Fales' story had me instantly involved in Nahlah's life, and the plot is original and thought-provoking. The Penumbra Paradox is most highly recommended.
