Being ardent abolitionists, the decision to delay their wedding and join the war came easily and was mutual between Duncan and Cynthia. But how did Duncan find himself on an abandoned island without a foot and addicted to a strange medicine? His mind returns to him slowly, and apart from the iron ball that had taken his right leg, Duncan does not have many other recollections. Mrs. Dawes doesn't want him in Black Ledge Cove, but Milly is kind to him. Something strange is happening on this island with no men or children, or so they tell him. After he is feeling better, Duncan is assigned to tend to the sheep, and with the help of Milly, he starts to understand what is happening. The Peculiar Affliction of Thomas Wade Duncan by Kip Koelsch is a gripping tale riddled with mystery and suspense that had me on the edge of my seat. The fast-paced narration kept me on my toes, and I was hooked from the first chapter to the last. Kip was very vivid with the well-developed and relatable characters' descriptions of events and emotions. This helped to create a mental picture of what was happening. I also found the book thought-provoking, as it got me thinking of the impacts of war and drug abuse as portrayed through the character of Duncan, who had lost his leg in the war and was fighting an addiction. This was a unique read; I cannot wait to read something else from this talented author.
