The Path to Christlikeness by Tom Payne is dedicated to the memory of Watchman Nee, and with good reason. Watchman Nee was a Chinese citizen who founded multiple churches in that country. He later was persecuted for his Christian beliefs following the Communist Revolution. His clear teaching on the Christian walk is a pleasure to read. The Path to Christlikeness by Tom Payne is quite similar and enjoyable as well.
Payne reviews the basics of salvation, power from God (called the Anointing) and how to minister to others. Citing such pillars of the Christian faith as Martin Luther, D.L. Moody, John Bunyan, and C.S. Lewis, he writes in such a way that anyone can understand and feel comforted by these lessons on the Gospel of Christ. A compelling storyteller, he also relates how these men were impacted by the prayers of others for their very salvation, and to receive this anointing from God. This anointing is a key part of fitting us for God’s work, drawing others to Christ.
Prayer and study are vital parts of Christlikeness, but like many people I find it hard to make time. Payne estimates that the average Christian spends maybe 15-30 minutes per week in prayer. To contrast that with Christ’s own activity, even on the evening before his death he spent hours in prayer before being apprehended. It’s so helpful to me to read books like the Path to Christlikeness to encourage my journey. I have had challenges in my life, as will everyone, but prayer and the Bible have pulled me through many difficult times. Try it today for whatever you’re facing.
