The deepest faith springs from the most heart-searing hardships, as Sara Stamp, author of The Other F-Word: When Faith Fills the Gap, shows in her inspiring work on the choices that we make when the central joys of our life are undermined by the harshest of life’s lessons. This inspirational work has as a background throughout Stamp’s own experience of how she rose above what others might have deemed an overwhelming tragedy—the loss of her five-year-old daughter from brain cancer. How Stamp encourages us to overcome the vicissitudes of life by strengthening our faith forms the crux of the work, which is an extremely joyful and hopeful one. Dealing with the range of emotions from fear to anger and beyond, her straightforward and appealing inducement to us all to maximize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives should serve as a wake-up call.
I love the warmth of Stamp’s approach that breathes from every page, rendering The Other F-Word: When Faith Fills the Gap a great source of comfort to those who read this guide to deepening one’s spirituality in times of crisis. Her extensive knowledge of the Scriptures clearly indicates her familiarity with the Written Word. That the Bible has brought great meaning to her life, and that she has a personal and intimate relationship with God is made clear throughout. To substantiate what she has to say about human relationships, in terms of both their triumphs and their failings, she quotes from the Bible at key places in the text, but in a most unobtrusive way so that she is never preachy but encouraging and uplifting the whole way.
