The Orb of Truth by Brae Wyckoff is the first book in the Horn King Series. It is an epic fantasy that tells the story of a small group of friends who reluctantly embark on a quest to bring Truth and Light back into their world. Like any good fantasy, there are a lot of heroes and villains in this story. The main protagonist is Bridazak, a four-foot-tall thief and con artist. When the story begins, Bridazak is successfully carrying out a con on a rich noblewoman, but apparently there is more to our hero than meets the eye. Soon he is tasked by the Orb of Truth with a quest to unite the forces of good and break the stranglehold evil has on their kingdom.
I liked The Orb of Truth and I think Brae Wyckoff brings a unique perspective to the fantasy genre. All of the traditional elements of an epic quest are here. There are plenty of battles, a lot of magic and mystery, and some appearances by mythical creatures like the unicorn. Sometimes the book has an Old Testament feel to it while at others it feels like something by J.R.R. Tolkien. I think The Orb of Truth could have benefited from a little romantic tension or sub-plot, but maybe that will come later in the series. There are still a lot of loose ends and unanswered questions so I look forward to the next book.
