Author Biography

I was born in Verkhnyaya Tura, a remote town in Siberia, into a loving family of geophysicists.
My first book, The Last Princess of Númenor, was published in Khabarovsk, Russia in 2010.
I spent five years in Bangalore, India, as a government scholar.
Since 2010, I live in Canada.
I volunteered and worked as an English teacher for the Immigrant Service Society of BC and took part in lots of films and TV shows shot in Canada as a background performer and stand in.
In 2016, I graduated from the Writing for Film and Television Program at Vancouver Film School.
I write fairy tales, fantasy novels, romantic comedies, and short stories.
The Orange Curse is my first book published in English.
As a child, I liked to read Italian fairy tales, wise, sunny, and humorous. Miracles would easily enter everyday life.
I was inspired to write my own story in which an eleven-year-old prince has to save a magic land of fairies from a malevolent sorcerer.
My characters have Italian names and live in a world similar to medieval Italy. I hope I have managed to recreate the joyful, magical, and sometimes humorous atmosphere of Italian fairy tales and that the adventures of my characters will delight readers.

The Orange Curse by Kristina Kamaera is a story of love, fortune, and a magical adventure. It is about the journey, not the destination—one filled with legendary myths, enchanting fairies, and frightening baddies. Three fairy sisters (as different as night and day) live in the charming land of Magarfala. Fata Nocha has been in love with Prince Arancio for a long time, but when he meets her sister, Fata Leta, he instantly falls in love with her. Scorned and wanting revenge, Fata Nocha makes a terrible bargain with Incubo, a wicked sorcerer. To save their son, Arancio sends him into hiding and casts a spell over himself and Fata Leta. Left with a king and queen in a foreign land, Mateo grows up not knowing he is a fairy. When he is eleven, he is torn from the family he loves and sent by the witch Baska on a quest to find oranges in Magarfala. Along the way, he makes friends with Tessa. Together they have to overcome being kidnapped and spellbound to restore light to Magarfala and defeat the evil they encounter.

A fantastical fantasy adventure for 9-12-year-olds, The Orange Curse is a captivating fantasy in the vein of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Kristina Kamaeva is a wonderful storyteller with a marvelous imagination. With descriptions like, ‘he rushed to their date like a crazy ostrich,’ the book is a fun and delightful read. I loved the worlds, people, and fantastical creatures. I also enjoyed the illustrations which helped to bring the story to life. Despite the best attempts of the villains and their nefarious schemes, the children learn how to turn their fortunes around with positive attitudes, and that love is more powerful than any curse. Guaranteed to enchant and enthrall, this mythical fairy tale boasts sinister and endearing characters, magical elements, and strong storytelling.

Hop on for a fantastical ride with Kristina Kamaeva's The Orange Curse. After acquiring dark magic from the evil sorcerer Incubo, Fata Nocha is jealous of her sister's marriage to King Arancio of the magical kingdom of Magarfala. She curses the royal couple, turning them into oranges. The baby, Prince Mateo, grows up in Renasa with Don, his loyal parrot companion. Forced into a quest to find the oranges, Prince Mateo and Don, accompanied by the homeless girl Tessa-Misfortune and her cat Ma, begin a treacherous journey with danger around every corner. But soon, the little group splits apart when thugs capture Tessa while Mateo finds himself at the mercy of Fata Nocha. The children and their friends must restore Magarfala to its original glory, save the fairies, and confront the dark sorcerer once and for all.

Inspired by Italian folklore, The Orange Curse contains a healthy dose of magic, mystery, and action that will transport readers to a magical place featuring talking animals, scary sorcerers, brave princes, and much more. Kristina Kamaeva weaves a fascinating mythological tale with an intricate plot and a large array of characters, some of whom you will love while others you will love to hate. This book will appeal to children and young adults alike. Kamaeva has crafted a rich and diverse fantasy world that truly fills you with wonder and awe, giving your imagination plenty of room to roam about. The characters are quirky and possess idiosyncrasies that make them stand out from each other and keep you thoroughly entertained. Throughout the book, you feel for the plight of Mateo and his friends, yet the ending leaves you satisfied with their story arcs. Highly recommended.

The Orange Curse is a work of fiction in the folktale, adventure, and fantasy subgenres. It is intended for middle-grade readers to enjoy and was penned by author Kristina Kamaeva with illustrations provided by artist Anna Shamsina. The work is a delightful fantasy adventure that draws inspiration from Italian folktales. It tells the story of a cursed prince, a girl plagued by bad luck, a parrot, and a cat who embark on a quest to find three mystical oranges that hold the key to breaking the prince's curse. Their journey takes them to a magical fairy country where they discover that the land has been shrouded in darkness for years, and an evil sorcerer eagerly awaits the prince's return.
