The Opening by J. Blanes is the first novel in a young adult science fiction series called The Universal Portals. I consider it exceptional in its genre. The science makes sense, the teenage characters are interesting and believable, and the writing and pace are good. None of the three teens who are the center of the story is a hero in the traditional sense, but together they form a good team that functions well under extraordinary circumstances. Their greatest asset is the strength of their friendship and that friendship is tested when they discover and are abducted by an alien spaceship.
I have read a lot of Young Adult science fiction but The Opening by J. Blanes stands out as one of the very best. It is an interesting story with interesting characters. What impressed me most is J. Blanes’ restraint. A lot of authors ruin their stories by going too fast, not taking the time to tell the tale correctly. J. Blanes does not make that mistake. This is the first book of a series. It is important that we like this book AND wait eagerly for the next books. This was accomplished beautifully. I like the four main characters, three of whom we got to know very well in The Opening. I think the bad guys are credible and believable, but there is so much more to learn about them. The Opening is exactly what the title implies; it's just the beginning of a long, arduous, and interesting contest. I can't wait for the rest of The Universal Portals series.
