The Numbers Killer, a serial killer who has littered the locale with bloody bodies, must be stopped. Agent Victoria Heslin and her partner, Dante Rivera, are puzzled over these crimes; they seem amateurish and rushed. Is there a purpose to these killings? What is the connection between them? Although the FBI agents in The Numbers Killer by Jenifer Ruff do not know who is committing these murders or why, readers are privy to this information from the beginning. The suspense comes from figuring out why the killer is killing, and as the story progresses, there are more mysteries to figure out. Are they a victim? Is an abusive spouse at fault? Author Ruff leads us on a precarious path between feeling sorry for the killer and wanting them strapped in an electric chair.
Delving into The Numbers Killer by Jenifer Ruff made the real world disappear as I peered into the mind of a killer who felt victimized and invisible. Taking revenge gives the killer power and as I read this psychological thriller, I felt both repulsion and empathy. As each chapter stacked up, I became more eager to get this puzzle figured out. That is what a good writer does… gives us anticipation and excitement that keeps us turning pages… and Jenifer Ruff does this expertly. Ruff also gives us an insight into Agent Victoria Heslin’s personal life that gives the story an added dimension, with her love for dogs (Jenifer Ruff lists dog rescue sites at the end of her book, so her love for dogs is real), and her awkward, yet promising relationship with her dog sitter, Ned. I look forward to reading more from Jenifer Ruff.
