The North Pole Penguin is a children’s picture book by Christopher Payne. The story follows Parker Preston, a bright-spirited penguin whose only wish is to spread Christmas cheer everywhere he goes. After a very successful Christmas, Parker is so grateful to Santa Claus that he sets off on a great journey to bring him presents and return the favour. He visits many locations, including the Amazon, New York and Canada, and in each place he meets new friends who enrich his life and give him more gifts to deliver to Santa. At the story’s lovely conclusion, Parker is able to tell Santa about all the places he has been and it becomes his tradition to make a visit every year.
The North Pole Penguin is told in rhyming verse that reminds me of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ when I read it out loud. The illustrations are bright and beautiful with vivid colours and very cute animals. The whole book has a hugely professional look to it and a classic, lasting format that could be read over and over again, even when it isn’t the holiday season. The rhymes would be delightful for young children to hear and the overall message of the story is one of kindness and friendship, which is perfect for the time of year in which it is set. Author/illustrator Christopher Payne has produced a beautiful and delightful book that is sure to be a family favourite in any household. I would highly recommend it for the festive season.
