In The Night The Moon Went Dark by Gordon Kibbee, we are introduced to the man in the moon himself, Clarence de Lune. Clarence and his moonfluffies dance every night in order to create the moonlight up in the sky at night. One night while the moon and his friends were partying, a blast of thunder and lightning caused the moon to go dark. When this happened, everyone in the galaxy became worried. It was so alarming that Merrybright, the queen of the galaxy, called Captain Diddly Doodle for help. They realized that the man in the moon was missing. Diddly Doodle and his crew waste no time and head for the moon to find de Lune. Landing on the moon, they find out that the man on the moon went missing when the lights went out. Will the team be able to find Clarence de Lune?
I found The Night The Moon Went Dark to be a clever and creative read. The characters were enjoyable and fun and the story plot was unique and unlike ones I have read before. The illustrations are gorgeous and go with the tale perfectly. I liked the message that Gordon Kibbee taught while you are reading. Phones and technology shouldn’t rule your life and that less time with them and more time in the real world is always better. Even with this being a young children’s book, the message still applies. It seems like kids are getting introduced younger and younger to smartphones and technology so that they are growing up without knowing how it feels to just play outside or to use your imagination. Overall, I think the author nailed the issue on the head in a way that a child could understand.
