The Nameless by Allison Rose is book one in the young adult fantasy Tales of an Outcast Faerie series, preceded by the book zero prequel novella, Outcast. The installment reads perfectly well without the prequel, given that it was released first. The Nameless centers around two female protagonists, Nola and Kelty. Nola is a human teenager with the hybrid gift of sight, although that particular “gift” was forced onto her in the form of an elixir. Kelty, a faerie, has also been horribly deceived and used as an unknowing pawn in a scheme that sees her cast out from her home and into the human world. Nola seeks Kelty out for help, putting Kelty in a position that may destroy any hope of her returning home. Ultimately, it is dark magic that binds Nola and Kelty, and dark magic that may just tear everything apart.
The Nameless provides a genuinely unique twist to a young adult and teen genre that I didn't think had any more twists to give. Allison Rose has unleashed the potential for an intriguing new series, and one which I am excited to follow. I have my concerns that some readers may be too fatigued by the deep-six of information in the early chapters to keep turning, but I pinky-swear promise that it really, truly is worth pushing forward. Once the dialogue gets moving and the introduction of ancillary faerie and human characters begin to spring to life, even with their motives wholly unknown, the pacing improves and the book then becomes impossible to put down. The Nameless has some themes somewhat reminiscent of Diana Young's FernGully, although it's fair to say that Rose administers her narrative and storyline with a maturity and depth that blows Young's book out of the forest. Rose is an exceptionally talented writer and I will continue with the series. Thankfully there's no wait as book two, The Court of Outcasts, has already been released.
