The Mystery of the Lightning-God by K. Mafikeng is a fun read harking back to Nancy Drew. The style is similar to that of the famous sleuth. The way Elena Crawford conducts herself and often vocalizes her thoughts is reminiscent of Nancy Drew. The protagonist even has an obsession with the detective and plans to be like her. Elena is brought into the case of a missing man who connects to a bigger mystery of an organization called the SSID - the Secret Spy & Investigative Department. The case of the missing Mark Evans ties into a possible haunting at his house. When the apparition appears, Elena is determined to prove there’s a real person behind the so-called haunting. The further Elena investigates, the bigger the mystery becomes.
K. Mafikeng is clearly a lover of classic children's mysteries. The Mystery of the Lightning-God is fun, nostalgic, and lighthearted. This is a great read for any lover of Nancy Drew! It’s perfect for a new generation to enjoy the same fun that Nancy brought, but with a modern setting that relates to a young audience today. K. Mafikeng even pays homage to the Hardy Boys with the delightful characters of Fred and Jeff Hart. She includes a cousin and friends that are reminiscent of George, Bess, and Ned. K. Mafikeng perfectly blends our modern world with an old-fashioned feel that makes you want to follow Elena as she puts clues together. Although the story takes place in the present day, a lot of the dialogue and tone reads like a Nancy Drew novel.
