The Mystery of the Hidden Jewels: Skylar Robbins Book 2 by Carrie Cross centers around skinny, thirteen-year-old Skylar Robbins who loves mysteries and dreams of being an undercover detective like her grandfather. It is her love of mysteries and challenges that draws her to a mysterious mansion whose owner, Xandra Collins, disappeared three years ago and left behind an intriguing note, saying she had hidden her famous jewelry box somewhere on the estate and the one to find it will inherit it. But while the hunt for the missing jewelry may bring Skylar an exciting, unforgettable adventure, if she isn't careful she might find herself caught up in trouble she has no way of escaping.
Skylar Robbins's adventures are brimming with excitement, mystery, and adventure. Skylar is brilliant, stubborn, and brave. Cross had me in endless awe at how she perfectly mixed the thrill of mysteries and adventure with the normal worries of a thirteen-year-old girl going into middle school and trying to fit in with a new crowd. The balance between Skylar's detective life and her middle school troubles made it easier to relate to her and I found myself looking forward not only to the answers to the mansion's mysteries, but to seeing how Skylar would overcome the usual troubles of a teenager. And when I thought I had Skylar figured out, she quickly proved me wrong and her actions and decisions constantly had me on the edge of my seat. The story is invigorating, appealing, and the foreshadowing helped build up so much anticipation in me that I felt like I was going to explode if I didn't reach the end sooner. The plot was clever and well-paced and the way the story ended had me definitely thirsting for more from this mystery series.
