In The Mysterious Adventures of Tommy Nowhere & Roscoe: Spirit of the Trees by James Stilson, daydreamer Tommy, a thirteen-year-old boy, suddenly discovers that his fantasies about being a valiant knight have come true. Transported to the magical Green Leaf forest in the land of Gaia, he and his friends and a monkey named Roscoe will have to help the people fight against the terror inflicted on them by the evil King Ludwig and Queen Kalma. Now an impossible task is entrusted to him — rescue the Spirit of the Trees and all the inhabitants of the land that have been captured by the evil king.
The Mysterious Adventures of Tommy Nowhere & Roscoe: Spirit of the Trees is a captivating story that fans of fantasy and stories like Narnia will enjoy. First off, the author taps into the psychology of the teenage hero in a very captivating manner, allowing readers to see the dream part of them in the protagonist. He then transitions brilliantly into a dreamlike world, creating a setting that is equally fascinating. Readers will enjoy the fast-paced plot, the surprising twists, and the dramatic moments that punctuate this beautiful story. The prose is highly descriptive and it succeeds in painting a picture of a world that readers could visualize as they read, feeling like they are part of that world. James Stilson is a master in crafting huge plots, but his ability to transform an internal conflict into a big realistic one is admirable. Everything starts in a young boy’s mind and then the reader finds himself following the character into an exotic world with poetic names like Gaia (it reminded me of Earth in Greek mythology). This is an epic tale that begs for a next one, it is so highly entertaining.
