In Michigan, industrialist Malcolm Thorne finances an archaeological expedition led by Trevor Grantham to prove the Pharaoh's Curse is a myth, escalating his rivalry with Julian Spade. The novella unfolds with intrigue and betrayal, with Thorne's murder sparking an investigation by Detective Carl Bell.
