The Midnight Man is the second novel in The Wiccan Chronicles by D. A. Barney. The story follows young Dani as she is forced to harness her powers and grow up a little too quickly just to survive. Dani knows her mother did her best to protect her, but it was all in vain in the end. Now, she and Kaitlin only have each other to fight off the Council of Warlocks and stay safe. Dani needs to gain control of her witch powers and she needs to do it now before it is too late. While Dani goes through the toughest times of her life, Jean fights a losing battle with his mind in his comatose state. The evil whispers to him to drive him mad, but Jean is ready to fight for survival. Will Dani and Jean win their battles? Or will they lose it all?
There is unrelenting action and a sense of foreboding in this entertaining and intricate story. Dani and Jean make for really good protagonists; they both have a purpose, they both have hurdles in their way, and D. A. Barney gives them ample opportunities to prove their worth to readers. Jean’s dilemma and his effort to get his life back are a great addition to the story. I love the background building and how the author allows the reader to get lost in the story. Dani’s life is so hard, but having Kaitlin in her life proved to be exactly what she needed to survive. I love the narrative, I enjoy the character building and I love the arc. The Midnight Man was surprisingly quick to read because I was absorbed in the action and the quest of each character.
