Deep down in the Diamond Ocean, the Pearly Palace bustled with preparations for a grand event: Princess Pearly’s tenth birthday. Princess Pearly was almost ready to party, except that she hadn’t found the perfect birthday dress. None of the clothes in her wardrobe would do, and neither the palace mermaids nor the Committee of Whales, both of whom she went to for help, were of much use. She was just about to give up when she stumbled upon the gown of her dreams, white and magnificent with sparkly shells, golden glitter, a dusting of diamonds, and all the dazzle. But it was too big—so big that even the palace octopus tailor couldn’t mend it—and Princess Pearly wanted to look perfect. What is a devastated princess going to do? The Mermaid Princess Pearly: The Magic of Acceptance by Charly Froh is a story about perfecting the imperfect.

If mermaids, colors, and life lessons appeal to you, then this book is for you. The Magic of Acceptance is a charming story told with cheerful wording by Charly Froh and beautiful, bold illustrations by Zuzana Svobodová. The text was filled with puns and new word combos, which was fun to read. The story includes an impressive amount of sea creatures, from whales to pufferfish, and each character plays an important role. There are a lot of lessons embedded in this story, and children may need some adults to help them dig deeper into the concepts. Ultimately, I liked The Mermaid Princess Pearly: The Magic of Acceptance, and I highly recommend it.
