In The Medium by David Hatton, we meet Michael and Suzanne, parents who are grieving over the death of their young son, Jason. Suzanne, unbeknownst to her husband, has attended an event featuring a psychic medium – Jackie Wallace. She is hoping to connect with her son and find solace and comfort with a message from the young boy. Suzanne, having received a message, leaves during the intermission of the event, planning to walk home and ponder on both the event and the message. She never makes it home. Michael, now dealing with the death of his son and the disappearance of his wife, spirals into a life of drinking and depression until Jackie Wallace turns up on his doorstep with a message for him – "I know where your wife is."

The cast of characters developed by David Hatton in The Medium and how they play off each other, both in a supportive capacity as well as a manipulative capacity, drives the story forward. Never sure who is being truthful or the real reason why they may be lying keeps the reader on edge and turning pages to discover what will be revealed next. The pain that each character endures dealing with the lies and the realities of the secrets that they each keep bring depth to the main players as well as the fringe supporting characters. As a reader, you are never sure how much of an impact each of them has until the surprising final twist at the end. A well-paced page-turner.
