The Meaning of Motherhood: Discovering Joy and Purpose Through Christ in the Everyday Moments of Mom Life is a work of non-fiction in the Christian living subgenre. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Alexandra Jensen. The book is a guide for women to use the teachings of the Bible to empower them on their journey as mothers, using the personal experiences of the author as the starting point for understanding and applying biblical teachings in getting the most out of the experience of motherhood.
I loved the focus of this book and the very real need it meets for full-time mothers who have started to have doubts about the importance of their work of raising children. It can be difficult to live in a fast-paced and results-oriented world in which people’s accomplishments are flaunted on social media, and the idea that a person can be ‘just’ a mother is insidious but commonplace. That’s where Alexandra Jensen’s work comes into the discussion, using entertaining anecdotes from her own life paired with an insightful discussion on scripture to highlight that the role of a mother is of utmost importance and that there is meaning in your purpose. I particularly appreciated how the tools laid out in The Meaning of Motherhood could be customized and applied to women in a variety of contexts, increasing accessibility and demonstrating that, despite diverse backgrounds, those moments of questioning your purpose are universal. Overall, it is an inviting and well-considered treatise on motherhood and all that comes with it and I recommend this book to all.
