In The Marquis, the Escape, and the Fox by Jenny L. Cote, the thirteen colonies fight for their freedom against a tyrannical enemy as the British fleet invades New York Harbor and seeks to assassinate General George Washington. The Epic Order of the Seven must find and stop the assassin before the Battle of New York begins. The Declaration of Independence inspires the patriots, but will they risk their lives for its words? Washington's Continental Army is chased across New Jersey by the Howe Brothers, but he learns to outsmart them and triumphs at Trenton and Princeton. The animal team knows that small victories won't win the war, and they must convince France to join the fight. They help the Marquis de Lafayette escape from King Louis XVI and sail to America to fight alongside Washington. Follow their journey from April 1776 to April 1777 in this thrilling ninth book of the Epic Order of the Seven series.
The Revolutionary War is made palatable and entertaining to children and teens yet again in the Christian historical fiction saga, The Marquis, the Escape, and the Fox. For those new to the series, although at this point nobody picking up book nine should be, the cast of characters who work as operatives are animals. As animal lovers who in our heart of hearts believe they are better than most of us people [ha ha!] this makes for a wonderfully creative twist to recreating history in an engrossing way. The Christian aspects coexist with conservative political ideas and action, and both fuel and guide the furry protagonists in all that they do. As a story set at the dawn of the United States as its own country, the expected American exceptionalism exists as a means of inspiring and providing context to what was, in reality, a brutal war. The soul of a country is also displayed through the enemy's use of things like traditional Christian celebrations as a means to harm others, such as the cover of “sumptuous feasting, dancing, and merrymaking” at Christmastide in flagrant disregard for what it truly stands for. Overall, this is a well-written and fun book with a solid message, suitable for readers of all ages.
