The Magus and the Fool is a work of fiction in the LGBTQ+, interpersonal drama, and family saga subgenres. It is intended for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Akiva Hersch. This intense and highly gripping drama examines what happens when Ohio native Carry Iverson moves to Lake Travis for a change of pace. A new figure in the lives of locals Donovan, Fallon, Levi, and Jacobi forces everyone’s secrets to bubble to the surface, including a fierce love triangle in which Fallon will stop at nothing to keep the flirtatious Jacobi from stealing away her husband. What results is a tense and dangerous tale of obsessive love.
Author Akiva Hersch offers readers an intricate and powerfully emotive exploration of human emotion in this novel. One of the features of the work which I found particularly impressive throughout was the thoughtful construction of dialogue, which so powerfully conveyed all the hidden emotions between the lines. I could easily see this novel being adapted into a really gripping work for the stage, such is its crisp sense of character, diversity, and empathetic drama. I enjoyed Carry as a central protagonist and found that he really came into his own in the second half of the plot when the call to action truly fell to him. Levi was also a particular favorite, sensitively portrayed but also unapologetically realistic, flaws and all. Overall, I’d certainly recommend The Magus and the Fool to readers seeking diverse modern drama with plenty of intensity on every page.
