The Lumpy, Lumpy Snowman by Meghan McCaffery, illustrated by Annie Wilkinson, is a sweet tale of a girl named Charlie who has an active imagination. Charlie wakes up one morning to see a lumpy, lumpy snowman in her yard. She wonders who made it. Then the snowman starts to move. Active, energetic illustrations show Charlie, her room, her toys, and her snowman in ways that help the reader see what is in Charlie’s mind. There’s even crystalline frost on her windowpane, a lamp on her bedside table, and a toy monkey, wearing a hat, on her windowsill. She also has a large lumpy teddy bear, a floral bedspread, and bunny rabbit slippers. Her living room scene has a cat sitting in a chair watching her as she plays with toy cars and a truck.
Have you ever seen something, and then looked again, only to see that what you saw the first time was something else entirely? That’s what happens to Charlie in this story. Watching Charlie discover her mistake and welcome reality will help readers talk to children about how making mistakes, and then discovering what really happened can be fun. The charming drawings bring this tale of an imaginative little girl who thinks she sees a lumpy, lumpy snowman to life.
