Author Tom Ruffles has crafted an intriguing and perplexing novel in which I felt totally immersed. The novel's biggest strength is in its sense of character, and the characterization of everyone you meet is vivid and realistically described, yet they're also larger-than-life figures leaping off the page to invite you into their world. The plot's whimsical nature, from Fannie's unusual request to the bizarre task of vacuuming tadpoles, creates a surreal alternative atmosphere that you can’t help but fall in love with. Tom's willingness to step into this strange situation highlights his adventurous spirit, and readers are swept along for the ride with detailed, confident narration that explains things so naturally that it never spoils the pacing. The narrative's quirky and unpredictable nature kept me engaged, eagerly anticipating how Tom would navigate the odd demands and what revelations awaited him as the plot twisted and turned with brilliant surprises.
