The Lost Son and Me: A Bible Story for Children with Life Applications by Martha Yamnitz is the familiar parable of the Prodigal Son written for children. Yamnitz starts by explaining what a parable is and then proceeds to tell the story in her own words. Each page includes the story at the top of the page followed by a paragraph with questions to help kids relate the story to their own life. Here is an example. After sharing that the younger son spends his inheritance on foolish things and runs out of money, she asks the question: "Have you ever spent your money on something that turned out to be “not so great?” Jeri Hanson has used soft colors to illustrate the story which adds to the attractiveness of the book.
As a former Sunday School teacher, I would have appreciated having The Lost Son and Me to share with my classes. Martha Yamnitz has done a great job writing the parable for young ears without sacrificing any of the accuracies of the parable. Including questions after each brief section that make kids stop and think about what they have heard is a marvelous addition. What I really like is that it is a Bible story but in a stand-alone book, not part of a Story Bible which can sometimes seem overwhelming to kids. The Lost Son and Me is a very easy way to introduce kids to an important Bible story. Teachers, parish educators, and parents will find this a worthwhile addition to their libraries.
