In a distant future, a particularly ordinary guy with nothing to lose sets on an out-of-this-world adventure in Zachary Watson’s The Lost Knight: Awakening. Cieran Kean’s parents died in a car crash, and he has become estranged from his friends after the tragedy. He gets an ultimate fresh start when he becomes a part of Earth’s attempt to build a colony in another solar system and goes under a long period of cryogenic freeze during the voyage. Waking up from his stasis is where the riot begins, as he finds himself an alien in an alien land. From learning to adjust fairly well with Trenah, his alien roommate, he gets to know more of the new world he inhabits including learning the language. Soon he gets a taste of alien gang encounters, with the True Sons being the biggest group of idiots. Far from the peaceful life that he hoped for, Cieran will fight slavers, mercenaries, and outright psychopaths.
There are plenty of possibilities for plot twists in a story set in a different galaxy, and Zachary Watson seems to have had fun in writing The Lost Knight, judging from the way he throws in trouble for his main character. Cieran and Trenah clearly have a blast, and you cannot help but feel like joining in the fray. Watson delivers a narrative with a comic book feel to it so that you can sequentially visualize what takes place on every page. It has the panache of world-building that unravels local color as you get into the dynamics of the storyline. Much can be said about telling a story about an ordinary guy who becomes extraordinary, but much can be also said about the way Zachary Watson writes about strong feminine figures, even if they are non-human. The Lost Knight: Awakening is an utter delight to read and a gorgeous sci-fi adventure that will keep you good company.
