The Lost Heir by Chris Gourley is a work of fiction in the fantasy genre and serves as the first book of the Inheritance Ring series. It is aimed at a young adult audience. The story is about a young woman named Button who is the heir to the throne. But when her existence is discovered by the various powers of the land, it begins a race between the factions that wish to see her in power and those that will do anything to prevent it. With Button toughened by her time in exile, she will fight for herself to discover who she can trust and who is out to hurt her on her journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed the world of The Lost Heir, which manages to weave a complex web of intrigue around supporting characters who may or may not be trustworthy whilst never letting the web get so complicated that a reader would need a diagram to keep up. The center of that web, of course, is Button herself who is simultaneously the missing head of a pyramid of nobility and royalty, but also a survivor willing to get her hands dirty and fight for herself. The duality of Button's past and her potential future leads to a constantly fascinating read, and as a character study of a young woman surviving in a dynamic and difficult landscape, The Lost Heir is an outstanding success. Author Chris Gourley should be commended highly for the world they have dreamt up, for the characters they have created to populate it, and for the exciting and challenging story being told in this book. I would highly recommend it to fans of young adult fiction and of the fantasy genre at large.
