The Long Road is the first novel in Morgan Rickards and Rhys Jones' Godless series. The story is in two parts, featuring Audeyrn’s journey as an emissary. Accompanied by Hearty, Natoly, and Gregyn, Audeyrn delivers the king’s message to the queen in Silentis, the capital of Sora. A war is waging between the Castans and Sorans, and the group must face perilous terrain and unfathomable storms. Meanwhile, Marble embarks on a dangerous journey to deliver a message from Sora to Castan. The mission is a secret, and Marble must rely on her thieving skills to avoid detection. A sudden raid prevents her from securing a mount and food before she flees into the desert with only one waterskin. Will the travelers survive their journeys?
Morgan Rickards and Rhys Jones gave the viewpoints of Audeyrn, Marble, Natoly, and Gregyn in great detail. It was intriguing to learn why Audeyrn chose his companions. Hearty is an obese knight, Natoly is a young kid from the streets, and Gregyn is an orphaned poacher. Marble’s ability to cause intentional chaos led to several entertaining battles with adversaries who underestimated her. In one remarkable fight, she chose a bowl as a weapon. Intense suspense held me captive on every page. The unpredictable plot is beyond imaginable with graphic details of every moment. Every supporting character added to the relatable feelings they each displayed. The transitions between character views were clear and easy to follow. I felt the end was bittersweet and unexpected. I am eager to continue the series. The Long Road will appeal to readers who enjoy reading about traveling adventures that follow the scenic route.
