In The Little Donkey by Shannon L Mokry, we are introduced to a donkey who is living alone in the meadow. He loved racing around the meadow, kicking up his hooves and rolling around in the flowers. Even though he was yelled at for ruining the flowers, the little donkey continued to do what he loved. Unknown to the animal, the humans were talking about getting rid of him. The girl didn’t want to and asked if they could keep him if she tamed him. The cowboy wasn’t convinced but gave the girl till the end of the summer. All the little girl would do was stand by the fence and watch the donkey roll around in the flowers. She never said anything and was so quiet that the animal didn’t notice her until she’d leave. This happened daily for the next two months. The donkey realized that he liked having an audience. She never yelled or scolded and then one day she didn’t show up. Not knowing that this was the little girl's plan, the donkey would stand at her spot and look out for her. She came back at the end of the week, only this time she came with a rope and carrot for the animal. He was so happy to see her. Slowly the girl began training the donkey to walk with a rope. Before long he was calm and not tearing up the meadow anymore. All he needed was a friend.
I thought The Little Donkey by Shannon L Mokry was an adorable read. The characters were likable and well written, and the plot will capture the attention of children easily. There are also lessons to be learned from this story. The little girl practiced patience while she calmly created a routine for the donkey that would help tame him. She took her time and in the end, it paid off. Not only was the donkey not destroying the garden anymore, but he was also able to stay. The illustrations were beautifully done and fit perfectly with the storyline. Overall, it’s a great read that children are sure to love.
