The subtitle of The Light in the Storm by Nikki Lynn Ragsdale poses a fundamental question and also summarizes what this brilliant memoir is all about: where was the ferry Stena Normandica the night the Penlee lifeboat went down? And how do we weather the storms in our lives? The author shares a captivating story that took place in December 1981 when they set out to travel by sea to spend Christmas with friends. The Penlee lifeboat disaster became a life altering experience. The book is a memoir unlike any other and, instead of narrating a series of events, the author deftly shares insights on how storms in our personal lives and in our world can usher us into a meaningful encounter with self and with God.

The Light in the Storm by Nikki Lynn Ragsdale is a book for everyone --- for who doesn’t have their share of storms? Who doesn’t have personal struggles and battles to fight, problems that can be as fierce and devastating as the furious waves of a powerful storm? Nikki Lynn Ragsdale writes with clarity and, while her prose and descriptive style can be alluring, it is the message of the book that will wake readers up to face life with more courage and equanimity.

How do we discover the light when darkness falls? Where do we get the strength to keep on fighting when we are all too vulnerable and exposed to crushing dangers? Where does God fit into the economy of our salvation? These are questions that the author answers in this spellbinding memoir and she does so in a very interesting and engaging way by inviting readers to share her powerful moments of epiphany. This book is a message of hope for a world that is filled with skepticism and fear, a message of hope that there is a light in our darkness and that in our brokenness we are held unconditionally in love by God.
