In The Letter Pen's Garden Secrets: Short Interwoven Magical Stories Inspired by Vintage Garden Art by Phyllis Smith, we see the summer season calling upon Mother Nature and her two lovers Father Sky and Father Time to look kindly upon all those who will be spending some time this Victorian holiday as guests at a luxurious summer home. They will include a songstress, a psychic, a painter, a lawyer, and a piano player. Keeping them company are a couple of spirit children, some fairies, and an injured mother rabbit hidden in the bushes. They reconnect with each other and try to keep abreast of their affairs, projects, and travel plans, as they share blooming flowers, picnics, artistic and musical talents, affections, and secret gardens while in their expensive and exuberant outfits. The gathering is not only a time of momentous joy but also an occasion for resolution. Past events that created sadness and self-doubt need to be healed for life to continue. It's time to reach closure and expand the heart with peace, laughter, and love.
The book's outstanding feature is its appealing and collage-like artwork by the author herself. The vibrant and stunning illustrations will keep the reader wide-eyed and impressed. The author created what she calls vintage garden art and formatting. At first one may think that the book's tone is purely quaint, playful, capricious, or whimsical. Phyllis Smith uplifts the reader with visions of a lazy summer afternoon filled with fragrant flowers, fairies, the laughter of children, and even the excitement of true love. Near its end, a dose of reality from a lingering and serious issue will bring the reader back to earth. The plot has an interesting turning point and resolution that is unexpected but gratifying. If you are a fan of beautiful, inspired art and stories that are fancifully quirky yet demure and even mildly intense, then The Letter Pen's Garden Secrets is for you.
