The Legend of the Rainbow Unicorn by C. S. Johnson, with illustrations by Levi Tonin, is a richly told, visually stunning jewel of fantasy, ideal for young readers and adult lovers of myth alike. At the heart of this sumptuous myth is Kleon, the original horse in the Garden of Eden, who offers to serve Eve and is richly blessed in return with a corona of beautiful horns in rainbow colors, each having a magical power. Along the way, the author weaves in the biblical tale of Cain and Abel, the Great Flood, a magical realm called Toulacoeur populated by dragons, elves, changelings, griffins, mermaids, and groundlings, all of whom fall prey, along with the humans, to greed and their thirst for power. Generations rise and fall in the struggle and, in the end, a powerful message of hope emerges, with an appropriate cautionary warning for future generations not to repeat the failings of the past.
C. S. Johnson has taken on the exceedingly difficult challenge of blending Christian lore, classical mythology, and fantasy into one seamless narrative and has succeeded wholly and with sufficient aplomb to make the whole project seem to have been a piece of cake. The story is mesmerizing and airtight, the visual component is breathtaking, and the underlying message is both timely and poignant. This is a visual, literary, and auditory feast that you will want to enjoy again and again.
The Legend of the Rainbow Unicorn is presented as a subtitled storyboard video, with first-rate narration by Alio Voices. The production values for both the video and the narration soundtrack are impeccable. The entire package is absolutely riveting in every aspect – it is almost inconceivable that so much mythological breadth and depth could be infused into a single video of less than ten minutes. The text and illustrations are presented in comic-book style, and both are uniquely beautiful. The Legend of the Rainbow Unicorn by C. S. Johnson is an epic tale, told by a master storyteller and full of important and relevant messages for modern times.
