The Legend of Hobart by Heather Mullaly is an exciting children's adventure with heart. This one is truly a story that will hold up for many years to come and has the potential to become a modern children's classic. It's fun all the way. Meet Hobart, an 11-year-old boy bullied at school for his name and his stutter, but he has a hero's heart and can't help but want to use it. More than anything he wants to be in Knight School and earn his place there by doing brave things like saving a damsel in distress, rescuing someone from a kitchen fire, or returning a runaway bull back to its pasture. But it doesn't seem to work out. The girls he knows take karate, the housewives in the neighborhood are vigilant about kitchen safety, the bull hooks his pants with its horns, and an ogre is involved, but you'll have to read the book to find out what happens there. So what is left for Hobart to do? How about slaying a dragon?
Mullaly has created a cute, irresistible story that kids will love. Her imagination and sense of humor are perfect for crafting a story that kids will relate to and be entertained by. The story is told in the first-person as well, which makes it personable and fun. We get to know Hobart and his situation on the very first page, and this boy springs to life in such a way we feel that we know him in real life. Kids that love stories about swords, horses, knights, and dragons will love this book, but so will kids that know what it's like to be in Hobart's shoes and have dreams about doing something heroic. Readers will fall in love with Hobart and his story, and I think parents, teachers, and other adults will like him too and will appreciate what this book is doing: Offering an adventure along with a life lesson. I can't think of a better book for a children's book club or recommended reading list. The Legend of Hobart by Heather Mullaly shows what is possible within all of us.
