The Last Wizard at The End of The World: An Arestus Adventure is a young adult fantasy by Mark Wallace Maguire. Arestus leaves the kingdom of the Pale Prince to accompany his friend, Cirin, on a voyage. They are shipwrecked on the island of Hallowell, which is about to be invaded by a witch and her army. Hallowell’s only hope is an exiled wizard residing at the end of the world, and the queen asks Arestus to find him. Arestus finds the embittered wizard, who reluctantly returns with him. As the army begins their attack using savage birds, the wizard confirms the strong powers of the witch. He wonders if his magical spells are sufficient to defeat the enemy, and he begins to feel remorse about his past. As the war rages, Arestus is given something very unexpected.
Young adults will certainly like The Last Wizard at The End of The World by Mark Wallace Maguire. It’s a light, moderately-paced adventure that keeps Arestus and his friends busy in combat combined with magic, humor, and compassion. Although young, Arestus is mature and brave and Cirin is a good mentor for a friend. The author’s writing style is relaxed, and the main characters display this style as well. I didn’t get to read the first book in the series, In Pursuit of The Pale Prince, but it seems as interesting as this sequel. The Last Wizard at The End of The World: An Arestus Adventure makes for a fantastic read.
