In the YA fantasy novel The Last Huntress: Mirror Realm Series Book I by Lenore Borja, readers are introduced to Alice, whose life changed on her 18th birthday. Even before that day, she had noticed strange things about her mirror image - but after her birthday, it become even worse, although paradoxically and at the same time, better. Alice learns that she is a so-called huntress, who can enter the realm behind mirrors and is destined to take care of demons that possess humans. With the new challenges come benefits as she finds new friends with whom she feels connected like nobody else before. She falls in love with a mysterious guy who turns out to be more than she first imagined. Fates become intertwined, and difficult decisions have to be made. Does a group of teenagers stand a chance of winning against the God of the Underworld?
When I read that The Last Huntress by Lenore Borja was the first book in a series, I was thrilled because after I finished it, I wanted more! The book was so much more than I initially expected after reading the blurb. I particularly enjoyed the connections to the Greek gods, goddesses, and the Furies. I have always been fascinated by Greek mythology, so it was a huge plus that the author treated this respectfully and interestingly. I enjoyed the author's interpretation and how she used these ancient characters in a modern setting. Another positive aspect of the story was that even minor characters were well developed and you remembered them instead of forgetting who was attached to which name. The story unfolded at a good pace, and I thank the author for keeping unnecessary erotic scenes out of the story - so many authors seem to lack the ability to keep romantic scenes tasteful, and can't let things happen behind a closed door. Borja managed to create a well-balanced novel that kept me engaged, and it was hard to put down!
