The Last Frontier of the Fading West is a work of historical fiction penned by author Helen Picca. Written in the style of a literary memoir of the main character’s life, we begin the action during the Second World War, when a young woman, Jennifer, has the war brought to her doorstep in a small seaside town. The sinking of a freighter by a Japanese submarine brings Navy man Jack Long into her life, and from thereon Jennifer realizes that there is a much bigger world out there for her to explore. This single event takes readers with her on a lifelong journey seeking answers, love and contentment in life over five decades as Jennifer journeys through her womanhood.
Author Helen Picca does a sensational job in bringing the different locales of her story to life at different periods of history. Researching a span of fifty years is no mean feat, and I felt the decades were clearly defined as Jennifer’s story continued, not just by their great visual description but by the dialogue and attitudes which were expressed as time went on. Jennifer herself is an 'everywoman' kind of character who is highly relatable, affected by the influences which invade her young life, and set on the quest of so many others to achieve marriage and family, but not necessarily true happiness. This makes for an emotionally rich and complex tale of a person finding their place in the world, especially after that world has been broken apart by war. Overall, I would highly recommend The Last Frontier of the Fading West.
