The Lost Dogs: The Long Road is the third in the lost dog series by Christopher Holt. It is intended for elementary-aged children and it will definitely hold the interest of both boys and girls. The reader learns that a science experiment has somehow gone wrong and has resulted in the three lead dogs' ability to understand human speech. At the same time, the experiment has led to the release of a virus which is potentially fatal to humans. As a result, all the humans have abandoned their pets and the pets are left to fend for themselves. Max, Rocky, and Gizmo are determined to find the scientist responsible for the mistake and then seek an antidote so that they can be reunited with the humans they love. Their adventure takes them across many threatening environments where they meet exciting new friends such as possums, alligators, cats, and other dogs. Their only clues are the beacons planted by the human belonging to a trusted friend.
The three dogs are simply lovable, each with a personality that will captivate the interest of the child reader. Illustrator Allen Douglas has literally brought Max, Gizmo, and Rocky to life. His illustration are realistic and yet non-threatening to the young child. Even the predator alligators are outsmarted by the canines who can now think like humans! I loved reading The Last Dogs and even though I had not read the first two books in the series, Holt did such a wonderful job of inserting clues that every child will be able to pick up the story which preceded The Long Road book. This is the type of book that children will want in their personal libraries. It can be read again and again, with new meanings acquired at each reading.
