The Korpes File Series by J. I. Rogers is a set of four fascinating, dystopian/science fiction short stories. In ‘Bride Price,’ a brother and sister casually decide that Regina will marry for a large dowry to save their ruined business. A decision so flippantly made has the potential to ruin the lives of everyone involved. In ‘Protocol 9,’ a team supposed to be a search and rescue ends up becoming a search and destroy. This story is set in a place you would never want to visit. A deadly jungle known as the ‘Seep’ has a myriad of hostilities. Survival is not guaranteed. In ‘Blue Moon,’ there is an undercurrent of something sinister on the move. Ed Olivier is trying to uncover the secrets that threaten peace in Ankoresh and Korlune. What is Marshal Hartoum up to? Will an astute astronomer ruin everything for them? Lastly, in ‘Forget-Me-Not,’ the plight of the Par Society refugees is announced to everyone in the Thallen Cluster by charismatic speaker Captain James Narcisco as he delivers a peaceful speech. Into the crowd step two strangers, their lives colliding in a moment that will rock Korlune forever.
The Korpes File Series by J. I. Rogers is a great short read for sci-fi fans. The world-building and characters are truly immersive. Descriptions range from a city’s core of wrought metal spires and cobalt glass to deadly moss-creeping jungles. These contrasts are animated and tugged at my senses as I moved between the worlds and saw glimpses of futuristic cyberpunk worlds. Yet what glued me to the pages were the characters whose outfits and missions might be out-of-this-world, but whose souls and motives were intensely human. This sci-fi collection boasts four stories that are succinct, vibrant, and full of tension and conflict. A highly enjoyable read.
