Marilyn R. Hill-Sutton is the wife of a Knight family descendant. She took on the task of tracing the family roots back to the early 1830's before the civil war. The book takes readers from the civil war through the death of Major John Knight Jr. The author discusses the legal battle contesting the Nuncupative Will of Mr. Knight. Major Knight was at that time a very affluent attorney and quite a successful businessman, making him one of the richest men of that era. He left his estate to his three children (whom he fathered by his slave, Violet), her family and the other slaves on his property; they went from slavery to owning the big house, and all the property. This book is written using court documents, newspaper articles, letters and much more.
I found the cost of things very interesting; corn, cattle and livestock, tools and anything else pertaining to running a plantation was cheaper than the cost of a slave. It was shocking to learn that a mother had to put up a bond to become guardian of her own children, after the death of her husband.
This book is such an invaluable and priceless piece of history that all history buffs will enjoy reading it. I learned more about the civil war and the way of life including cost of living, administrators of property and much more through this book then most other books I have read of that era. The author has really researched this long and hard to give the readers a chance to look into her family’s life.
